Exeter Fine Crafts, the Seacoast’s most comprehensive selection of fine craft classes for students of all levels, is offering a new slate of courses for Winter and early Spring 2014. See below for the schedule of one-day and multi-week workshops and courses in pottery, jewelry and fiber art.

Social Media Workshop

All these ‘Tweets’, Hashtags’ and ‘Likes” got you feeling behind in this 21st century world? Join artist, educator, and EFC Board Member Becky Barsi as she demonstrates simple and effective approaches for using social media to promote your art or business. This interactive workshop will introduce you to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and the tools you’ll need to get you networking today!

Bring your own device ( laptop and/or iPad/smartphone). Digital images of your artwork, or of yourself in the studio, saved to computer, flash drive, smartphone, or the cloud are optional. We will work individually or in small groups.

Lather up! Soap Making Workshop

Saturday, November 7, 10:00 AM -1:00 PM

Learn the basics of making cold process soap. We will briefly discuss the history and chemistry of soap making, the materials used, safety precautions when working with sodium hydrochloride, coloring and scenting soap, and how to prepare the soap mold. Using plant based oils, essential oils, flower petals, and natural exfoliants, students will make their own 2.5 lb.(10 bars) batch of soap to take home. Handouts with instructions, tips, and recipes to try will be provided. Students should wear a long sleeved shirt and bring an old towel or blanket to insulate the soap on the way home.

Acoustic Guitar Workshop

For present and future guitar enthusiasts who would like their guitars to last longer, be easier to play, sound and look better. We will cover how to store your guitar and avoid damage, how often to change strings, what ‘action’, ‘intonation’, and ‘relief’ are, what a’ truss’ is for, and how to adjust it. Also covered; what to look for when choosing a guitar, tips for enhancing its sound, and which woods are best for each type of music. This class is for anyone interested in learning more about guitars. All are welcome, with or without an instrument!

Basic Basic Jewelry 2

Thursdays, October 1 – November 19, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm (8 weeks)

For students who have basic and beyond basic skills (designing, sawing, filing, polishing) and need more practice with tools and soldering. Design and create a project of your choice: a ring, earrings, bracelet or pendant. Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry or instructor’s permission.

Beginning Jewelry

Tuesdays, September 29 – November 17, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm (8 weeks)

Learn basic skills in this 20-hour evening beginner’s class: designing, sawing, filing, polishing, bezel and texturing metal techniques. Design and hand make a sterling silver pendant with a bezel set gemstone.

One Day Jewelry Making Workshop

Saturday, Sepember 26, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

You will learn how to make jewelry out of sterling silver sheet and wire by cutting shapes, filing, hammering, and texturing. Demonstrations will be given along with studio time for you to create a simple pendant or pair of earrings. Additional silver can be purchased in class. This workshop makes a great transition into the “Beginning Jewelry” class. (Ages 15 – adult)

Making Your own Wire Chains

Saturday, August 22, 10:00 am – 4:00 PM

In this new summer workshop, students will learn how to make chain links and handmade clasps. soldering, hammering, and forging techniques will be demonstrated. Students will leave with samples of different chains, or if time allows, a completed bracelet. Copper will be provided for practice. Sterling Silver may be purchased from the instructor.

Ring Making Workshop

Learn to create beautiful rings of your own design. Students will explore several jewelry making techniques: soldering, forming, and hammering to make their own textured rings. Copper and studio tools will be provided. Sterling silver will be available to purchase. (Stone setting will not be covered.)

Wax Carving Workshop

Saturday, October 24, 10:00 am – 5:00 PM

Students will create waxed carved rings, stacking rings and textured bands while experimenting with various tools. Waxes will be collected at the end of day, cast, then made available for pick up at a future determined date. Students pay for silver castings based on the weight of the piece. Prerequisite: Jewelry I

Wheel Throwing Basics and Beyond

Tuesdays, September 29 – November 17, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm (8 weeks)

This course will focus on various throwing techniques, with weekly demos and instruction given on the wheel. Students will have the flexibility to learn at their own pace. They will be guided toward creating a variety of simple forms and then shown more challenging forms such as teapots and casseroles. Additional clay can be purchased.

Wheel and Hand Building Basics

Explore a variety of pottery making techniques from hand building, using coils, slabs, and pinch pots, to working on a wheel. Students may choose to focus on the wheel, hand building or both to create simple and/or more complex forms. Additional clay can be purchased.

Learn to Throw in One Day Workshop

Saturday, September 26, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Learn the basics of how to throw a pot on a potter’s wheel from start to finish. This hands-on, intensive workshop is ideal for students who have never worked in clay or haven’t touched clay for years. In just four hours, complete at least one piece to take home after it is fired in the kiln. (Ages 16 - adult)

Nuno Felting—Art To Wear Workshop

Saturday, October 10, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

This class is for any experience level. Students will learn about felting materials, techniques, and a little folklore. Use merino wool roving, art yarns, wool curls, and organza silk fabric. Create a decorative, lightweight scarf or an art piece you can wear or hang proudly on your wall. Your finished work will be approximately 12” X 54”. Bring four big towels with you; they will not be harmed.

3D Needle Felting a Vessel

We'll work (play) with wools and resists to create; a vase, a bowl, or a luminary. Learn to make layers, ruffles or fun fins! No felting experience is necessary Please bring a few towels.

Registration and Policies

The most complete, up-to-date information and a printable registration form can be found at exeterfinecrafts.com

Students are considered registered when tuition is paid in full. If, after paying, a student is unable to attend, tuition will be refunded, less a $25 processing fee, only if student withdraws (by phone or in writing) at least 10 days prior to the first class. No refunds will be given after that time.

If the class is cancelled by EFC or the date is changed and the student is unable to attend, a full refund will be given. In case the class is cancelled or the date is changed, students will be notified one week prior to the advertised start of class.
Every effort will be made to contact students if class is cancelled due to severe weather. Students may also contact the shop. A make-up class will be scheduled.

Separate tuition checks are required for each class/workshop.

Studio information: studios are open for the use of registered students from 10am-4:30pm daily, 12-3:00pm on Sundays during the duration of the class, except when other classes are scheduled. Studios are not open between sessions.
